Automatic and Manumold Injection Moulding

Case Study
Seldoren Dental Syringe

Problem

Traditional dental syringes are manufactured in metal and are therefore heavy in use. They do not offer safety features to protect the dentist or patient from needle stick injuries, which could spread hepatitis or aids.

Solution

Design and manufacture a lightweight plastic syringe assembly, which can be sterilised using an autoclave, and include safety features to protect the user in use and provide a safe disposal system on completion of the treatment.

Method

The Seldoren team of experienced dental surgeons brought their ideas to PMP for material selection, design and engineering support. The product design was developed and full product drawings produced which enabled prototype tooling to be made to explore potential materials and design improvements. This tooling was then converted for volume production use.

The mouldings are produced using a combination of fully automatic multi cavity tooling manually operated tools using the manumold process. The plunger is passed through the syringe body and the overmoulding creates a permanent assembly of the two parts.

Result

The product has fulfilled all expectations and has recently been adopted in hospital use as a cost saving alternative to disposable syringes. Instead of throwing away complete syringes after a single use, only the needle, adopter and safety sleeve are disposed of, with the main body sterilised for future re-use.
